Clear-Span vs. Multi-Span: Which Frame Is Right for You?

The frame is the skeleton of your steel building. Two of the most common I-beam frame types are clear-span and multi-span. The difference comes down to one question: do you need a wide-open interior, or can you work around a few columns?

Clear-Span: Nothing in the Way

A clear-span frame has no columns inside the building. The frame runs from one side wall to the other.

Good fit if you need:

• Open floor for equipment, vehicles, or aircraft
• Room for large events or gatherings
• Flexible layouts you can change later

Multi-Span: Columns Inside, Savings Built In

A multi-span frame adds interior columns that share the load. Those columns let the building go very wide while using less steel.

Good fit if you need:

• A very wide building, like a large warehouse or distribution center
• Space where a few columns won't get in the way, like aisles of racking
• The most building for your budget at larger widths

How to Choose

Picture how you'll use the floor. If forklifts, vehicles, or crowds need to move freely everywhere, clear-span is usually the answer. If your space naturally divides into rows or zones, multi-span can give you more width for less.
